Founded by Harry N. Abrams in 1949, HNA was the first company in the United States to specialize in the creation and distribution of art books. Times Mirror acquired the company in 1966, and Harry Abrams retired in 1977. For many years HNA was under the direction of Paul Gottlieb; it was acquired by La Martinière Groupe in 1997.

Stewart, Tabori & Chang (STC) was founded in 1981 by Andrew Stewart, Lena Tabori, and Nai Chang, all three former HNA executives. STC was purchased by HNA in 2000 and is now an imprint of HNA under the direction of President and Publisher Leslie Stoker.
STC is the publisher of high-quality illustrated titles, specializing in the categories of cooking, interior design, gardening, crafts, pets, health, sports, and popular culture. Some of STC’s bestselling titles are: Grandmother Remembers, George Rodrigue’s Blue Dog Man, Visions of Paradise, I Dream a World, Lightweights, and Weekend Knitting.

ABRAMS BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS
HNA launched its first full list of books for children, Abrams Books for Young Readers in 1999, under the direction of Vice President and Publisher Howard Reeves. Some highlights of this award-winning children’s line include the bestselling Animalia by Graeme Base; Heart to Heart: New Poems Inspired by 20th–Century American Art, winner of the coveted Michael J. Printz award; Stephen Huneck’s Sally Goes to the Beach; and Laurent de Brunoff’s Babar’s Museum of Art.
AMULET BOOKS
In Spring 2004, Abrams Books for Young Readers launched a new imprint, Amulet Books, for middle-grade and teen readers. The imprint encompasses both fiction and nonfiction with its premiere list of four novels and four nonfiction titles. The fiction list includes titles by celebrated author William Sleator and best-selling author/illustrator Graeme Base. The non-fiction list debuts with four books that are part of an ongoing illustrated teen advice series called Sunscreen.
ABRAMS IMAGE
In Spring 2006, HNA launched a new imprint, Abrams Image. Abrams Image publishes illustrated books and gifts for savvy readers of all ages who share a discerning sensibility. The imprint’s inaugural list includes titles such as: Peeps: A Candy-Coated Tale by Mark Masyga and Martin Ohlin, about everyone’s favorite marshmallow confection; Donny Miller’s edgy Beautiful People with Beautiful Feelings; and an important graphic novel by Brian Fries called Mom’s Cancer, about one family’s struggle with this devastating disease.
