An inspiring entrée into the world of black American artists Wake Up Our Souls is an intriguing tour of the work of black American artists, looking at more than 300 cumulative years of contributions to the vast galaxy of visual art. Published in conjunction with the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the nation's greatest repository of black American art, the book reproduces more than 45 artworks along with extended captions and photographs of the artists. More than 30 artists are included, some discussed in detail—such as Joshua Johnson, Augusta Savage, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, William H. Johnson, and Betye Saar—while others are spotlighted to offer a complete picture—including Robert Scott Duncanson, Gordon Parks, and Faith Ringgold. The book reflects a wide range of media (from photography, painting, and sculpture to mixed-media), styles (from realism to abstraction), and subject matter (from people to nature), and includes a glossary of art terms, bibliography, and suggested further reading. A wonderful introduction to black American artists.
